![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() the rabbit hole is deep! I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface and I’ve been double minded most of my Christian life! I’m thankful for people like Michael Kruger, Mike Licona, NT Wright, Tim Mackie, even agnostic Bart Eherman, and others who have taught me so much. I’ve searched for experts (Christian and unbelievers) from different disciplines and have tried to listen and weigh the arguments. More often than not, it has been an intellectual pursuit - why my denomination and not the Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses and their Bibles? What about the Canon of Scripture? How do we know we have the right books? Why are there so many denominations? Who is the historical Jesus? Did He claim to be God? Did his Jewish monotheistic disciples believe He was God? Did the resurrection of Jesus and other miracles in the Bible really happen? Is the theory of Evolution true? Does God exist? I’ve been on a journey since then in search of truth. I became a Christian when I was 15 years old. ![]()

Dex is a tea monk, itinerant but not indigent or celibate. I may have been hungry when I wrote this, but upon editing I find that my general impression stands: this is a comforting book, the same kind of cozy that Dex themself tries to impart to their visitors. This is the kind of book that fills you up. (Well, moon.) Most of all it is satisfying. A Psalm for the Wild-Built, the new novella from Becky Chambers, though obviously brief, is a complete meal: it has the rich depth of philosophical reflection, the acid brightness of humor, and the unfamiliar spices of a whole new planet. ![]() ![]() However, Strickland throws it all over and abandons his family to become an artist in Paris. He has a wife and two lovely children and enjoys a settled life with the prospect of a prosperous retirement. In place of Paul Gauguin, Maugham presents us with Englishman Charles Strickland, who leads the life of a mundane London stockbroker. And it was in The Moon and Sixpence that Maugham showed how this tension plays itself out, and how it affects the lives of everyone associated with artists of genius who try to harness the creative demons that drive them. It was this dichotomy between the ordinary and the driven that attracted Maugham. Real artists of genuine ability and intellectual vigor are seldom driven by forces that most people can comprehend. But he did not attribute this prolific energy merely to the desire of the artist to produce art that satisfied common notions of aesthetic delight. Throughout his long life, Maugham was an interested observer of the creative impulse. Although names and nationalities have been changed, there can be no doubt about the real identity of the principle character of this fascinating novel.
